The conditions to obtain a visa that bring you closer to your family, and your new home.
Everyone wants to be closer to their wife and children. We know this, and so does the law. Belgium has a few possibilities when it comes to reuniting married couples and families, providing that a member of the family resides in the country.

The first condition to obtain a permit to stay more than 3 months in Belgium to join your family, is that one of the family members has been allowed to live in Belgium for an unlimited amount of time or to establish themselves in the country, this has to have been granted for at least 12 months already. However, if the marriage happened before one of the family members arrived in Belgium, or if they had a child together that is still a minor, then this delay is void. Having a family member that is considered a refugee or that benefits from subsidiary protection also voids this delay.

If you aren’t married but are officially registered as a couple in your country and if this is recognized by the Kingdom of Belgium, then you can join your significant other provided the same delay as in the previous paragraph is respected. However, a few additional conditions apply in this case. The partners need to be able to prove that they have had a stable relationship by at least having legally lived together for a complete year in Belgium or another country; or that they have been together for at least 2 years before requesting the permit, to prove this they need to show proof of habitual phone, e-mail or mail contact and that they saw each other at least 3 times in the 2 years for a duration of at least 45 days; otherwise if they have a child together, this is also considered enough proof.

Finally, if all these conditions are filled, a few simple requirements still remain. In both cases, the person in Belgium needs to prove that they have a house suitable to accommodate the family members and that it fulfills certain legal requirements, that they have sufficient resources to provide proper sustenance, and they need to prove that they have medical insurance that covers the people wishing to join them in Belgium.
